Bakground and objective: Melon (Cucumis melo L.) an important crop belong to of Cucurbitaceae family. Besides the fragrance and flavor, antioxidants, vitamins, polyphenols has led to melon as desirable fruit being consume all over the word. Shadegan landrace melon is an important Iranian indigenous landraces that is cultivated in some regions of Khuzestan province. Due to high diversity in some characteristics of Shadegan landrace melon, this research was conducted to bred and purified this landrace using full sib families selection method.
Material and methods: This project was carried out in Dashteazadegan region and Behbahan Agriculture Research Station. In the first year, high- growing fruits without any disorders were selected in Dashtazadegan farms. Seeds of selected fruits were cultivated at Behbahan Agriculture Research Station in the second year. During flowering stage about 300 high growing as well as free of any pests and disease plants, that female flower appeared earlier, were selected and self pollination was done. In the third year, half of self-pollinated seeds were cultivated in mid February to test progenies. Fruits were harvested in mid May In the fourth year, stored seeds were cultivated in crossing block. Seeds of cream and orange flesh fruits were cultivated in mid February and early August respectively to prevent pollen transfer from one population to other. Progenies of orange flesh fruits, as improved population, were compared with Shadegan landrace in the fifth year. Data were statistically analyzed by SPSS software using T-Test.
Results: In the first year seeds of selected melons were collected in Behbahan Agriculture Research Station. About 300 self pollinations were done and 33 self pollinated fruits produced in the second year. Results of progenies test showed, fruit characteristics (peel and flesh color) of seven populations were uniform in the third year. The color of flesh fruits in four and three lines were cream and orange respectively. In the fourth year, segregation was observed in cream-colored flesh fruits. However segregation was not observed in orange-colored flesh. In the fifth year some characteristics of orange-colored flesh, as improved population melon were compared with Shadegan landrace. Results showed the yield and mean fruit weight of improved population melon were significantly higher than Shadegan landrace at 1% and 5% probability level respectively. The differences of total soluble solids, thickness of peel and flesh fruit and seed cavity diameter were not significant between improved population and Shadegan landrace melon.
Conclusion: Yield of improved population melon was significantly higher than Shadegan landrace. In addition, some important quality characteristics such as peel and flesh color of fruit were uniform in improved population that led to increase marketability.
