Background and Objective: Girdling involves removing approximately 5–10 mm of bark and cambium tissue from the trunk to restrict phloem transport between the canopy and roots, a practice that has been used for thousands of years to improve crop yield. As a horticultural technique, girdling disrupts the downward translocation of photosynthetic products such as carbohydrates and certain compounds like auxins, and by manipulating the source–sink relationships of vines, it affects flowering, fruit set, growth, and fruit quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of girdling timing on fruit quality and to investigate the postharvest behavior of fruit from girdled vines.
Materials and Methods: This research was conducted to examine the effect of girdling timing on the qualitative traits and storage performance of Hayward kiwifruit over two years (2023–2024) in Astara County. Kiwifruit vines were girdled at a height of 0.5 m above ground level at two-week intervals from early May to early September, comprising 10 time-point treatments. Overall, girdling was performed at two stages before flowering (reproductive organ differentiation stage), three stages during rapid fruit growth, two stages during fruit development, and two stages at maturity. Data on fruit quality traits at harvest and during storage were analyzed via two-year combined analysis with two factors (girdling time and storage duration) in a randomized complete block design with three replications.
Results: Two-year combined analysis showed that the interaction between girdling time and storage duration was not significant for fruit quality traits. However, mid-summer girdling, particularly in early August (coinciding with the fruit development stage), significantly increased soluble solids content, titratable acidity, vitamin C, fruit firmness, fruit dry matter, total phenol content, and antioxidant activity compared with the control and several other treatments. The highest soluble solids content (14.28 %) was observed in the early September girdling treatment in the second year, and the lowest (11.45 %) in the late-May girdling treatment. The highest total phenol content (1.006 mg g⁻¹ fresh weight) was recorded in the late-August girdling treatment in the second year. During storage, soluble solids content, fruit dry matter, total phenol content, and antioxidant activity increased, while titratable acidity, vitamin C, and fruit firmness decreased.
Conclusion: Trunk girdling had no effect on fruit storage life. However, fruit from trunk girdling vines had different maturity characteristics and quality traits at harvest than fruit from vines that were not trunk girdling. Based on the results of this study, early-mid summer girdling can be used to improve fruit quality in the Hayward cultivar.
